Current RISE Programming:
YouthReach – This program has come out of a partnership between RISE and the local YMCA. The RISE Resource Coordinator works with YMCA staff to run a free after-school program at the school on Wednesday afternoons.
Diversity Club – With the support of the RISE Resource Coordinator, two teachers have stepped up to run this club. Six students participate on Thursdays after school.
Community Reading Day – This is a district-wide event that welcomes community volunteers into the classroom to read to students from the same book. The RISE Resource Coordinator participated as a volunteer so that the Alternative Education students could have a volunteer read to them.
Sewing and Knitting Club – Two teachers approached the RISE Resource Coordinator with the idea of helping kids learn how to sew and knit. Together they set up an after-school option for kids to do just that. The group meets on Wednesday afternoons.
Cooking Club – Many students enjoyed the cooking club that RISE offered last year and have been asking to have it again. The RISE Resource Coordinator has identified and recruited a volunteer to run this program, and they will begin in mid-January.
College Intern – A student in the Education Department at Bennington College contacted the RISE Resource Coordinator to see if he could do an internship at the Athol-Royalston Middle School. He just started his service and will offer 210 hours to the school over the months of January and February. The RISE Resource Coordinator has been working with teachers and administrators to prepare a varied schedule and a meaningful experience for this student intern.
Friday Evening Programs – Throughout the needs assessment process, many students requested more opportunities to socialize during the evening hours. In response, the RISE Resource Coordinator has developed programming once a month on Friday evenings at the school. These events run from January through April.
Unified Arts Presenters – The Unified Arts Department (gym, art, music, health, computers, etc.) has asked the RISE Resource Coordinator to identify and recruit guest presenters to come in during the last quarter of the school year. The department is short staffed, and when the fourth quarter comes around, students will have to repeat a class they have already taken. In an effort to enhance the curriculum and keep students engaged, the teachers are working with RISE to bring in special programs and presentations from community members.
Past RISE Projects:
Cooking Club – A student at UMass volunteered to lead this popular after school club. Fifteen students participated , and they learned to cook a variety of meals as a group.
Japanese Language and Culture Club – Two volunteers led this after school club with 5 students. Students learned basic language skills, watched Japanese films, and enjoyed Japanese cuisine.
Classroom Support – A volunteer worked in a classroom offering support to small groups of students.
Art Club – A community volunteer came in once a week to offer an arts-based after school program for a small group of students
Guest Performance – RISE recruited an improvisational comedy troupe from UMass to come into the school and offer a free performance. The students loved it.
Youth Opportunities Fair - This event happens in the Spring and is an opportunity for youth-service providers to come into the school and promote their summer programs. The goal is to make the students more aware of and excited about the many opportunities to engage in out-of-school time programming. This fair also allows the Middle School to open its doors to community partners and forge relationships with organizations and agencies that work to benefit the students.
