Current RISE Programming:
Veterans Education Project (VEP) – The RISE Resource Coordinator invited guest presenters from VEP to come in and talk to two health classes. The presentation focused on their experiences in Vietnam as well as their experiences integrating back into society after returning from the war.
Field Trip Chaperones – The RISE Resource Coordinator served as a chaperone on a trip to Greenfield Community College. He took a group of seniors to visit some classes and hear from several professors.
Curriculum Scanning – The Special Education Department requested that the RISE Resource Coordinator seek out a volunteer to help them scan curriculum into a new computer program. The program allows students to listen to content being read aloud to them rather than having to read it from the text. A volunteer from Smith College is currently working with the department to prepare and organize curriculum to be scanned.
School Atmosphere – The staff at Smith Vocational are concerned about the school atmosphere and the level of prejudice amongst the student body. They have asked the RISE Resource Liaison to join a taskforce that is working to improve the sense of community at the school. RISE has partnered with the District Attorney’s office to look at tolerance and anti-bullying initiatives.
Student Exchange – The RISE Resource Coordinator is working on setting up an exchange between students at Smith Vocational and students at Dean Technical High School in Holyoke. This exchange would give students from a variety of backgrounds the opportunity to come together around a shared academic and vocational interest.
